Spinal Cord Disorders

چکیده
Spinal cord disorders encompass a wide range of pathologic entities and affect all age groups. Some spinal cord disorders may have catastrophic outcomes if they are not recognized early in the clinical course. The ultimate neurologic outcome with many of these disorders may depend on expeditious recognition in the emergency department (ED), with appropriate initial investigations, neuroimaging, management, and consultation for definitive therapy. Early presentations of spinal cord syndromes are frequently subtle, and diagnosis may be difficult if not impossible in the early stages of disease. As with many disease processes affecting the nervous system, correct diagnosis and appropriate management require knowledge of the anatomic organization of the spinal cord and skill in taking the history and in performing the neurologic examination. This chapter generally is concerned with nontraumatic processes affecting the spinal cord and its vascular supply as well as processes compressing the spinal cord. Spinal cord trauma is discussed in Chapter 43.

Decrease in Cavity Size and Oligodendrocyte Cell Death Using Neurosphere-Derived Oligodendrocyte-Like Cells in Spinal Cord Contusion Model
Background: Oligodendrocyte cell death is among the important features of spinal cord injury, which appears within 15 min and occurs intensely for 4 h after injury, in the rat spinal contusion model. Accordingly, the number of oligodendrocytes progressively reduced within 24 h after injury. Administration of oligodendrocyte-like cells (OLCs) into the lesion area is one of the approaches to coun...

Introduction: Spinal Cord Injuries (SCIs) are the main factor in the sensory disorders, which are caused by spinal cord strikes such as car accidents. Previously it was thought that SCIs could not be treated. However, new advances in neurology showed possible treatment to relieve pain in these patients. This article presents a brief review about physiology of spinal cord, kinds of injuries and ...

Summary: Background: Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) usually have permanent and often devastating neurologic deficits and disability and pain (1). According to the National Institutes of Health, "among neurological disorders, the cost to society of automotive SCI is exceeded only by the cost of mental retardation"(2). Neurogenic pain constitutes one of the enigmatic clinical sy...
